If the families who founded Walterboro in 1784
were to return today, they would surely feel right
at home, as many of them would be able to walk up the steps of their own houses. They would see the same massive, moss-draped oaks that line the streets and could measure the growth of the azaleas and camellias that they themselves had planted
about two hundred years ago.
   
The planters who lived in Walterboro during the summers established the first library in 1820, and this historically significant building is still standing today.
   
Walterboro noteworthy dates:
   

  • 1665 Lamp Granted by King Charles II to Lord Colleton, one of the original Lord Proprietors
         

  • 1784 City of Walterboro was settled
         
  • 1817 Walterboro designated County Seat
        
  • 1826 Walterboro incorporated
